At approximately 2:30 am on Friday 23 December 2011, the body of a woman (M.
‘A.
), 45, was admitted to Shifa Hospital in west Gaza City.
According to medical sources, the woman had been strangled to death.
A police investigation found that the woman was killed by one of her relatives.
The killer surrendered to the police and confessed that he had committed the crime to preserve “family honor”.
The Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights strongly condemns this crime and asserts that the leniency with which the authorities treat the perpetrators of such crimes—who usually allege that they were acting to preserve “family honor”—has contributed to a noticeable increase in such murders.
Al Mezan expresses its concern that the killer is claiming he committed the crime to preserve “family honor” in order to escape judicial punishment, as the law in force in lenient with this type of draconian crimes.
Al Mezan calls on the authorities to treat all killings of women as the crime of murder and not to look for extenuating circumstances outside the law.
