Gunfire Celebrating Successful Tawjihi Exam Results Kills Gaza Student: Al Mezan Calls for Effective Procedures to Ensure against Mishandling of Weapons

On Sunday 24 July 2011, Fatima Ahmed Hassan Al Masdar, 18, sustained a bullet wound in the neck resulting in her death.
According to field investigations by Al Mezan, this incident occurred due to the firing of bullets into the air in celebration of her successful results in high school exams.
She had scored 95.
2 percent on the tests, which prepare students for entry into universities.
Al Masdar was among the ten students receiving top scores in the annual Tawjihi High School exam in the Middle District.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights regrets the killing of Al Masder and expresses its grave concern by the ongoing killing of victims due to the mishandling of weapons.
Al Mezan calls for investigation of the Al Masdar case and all cases involving the unlawful and mishandling of weapons, as well as internal explosions.
Since the beginning of the year, Al Mezan has documented the killing of nine persons in such cases, among them three children, and the injury of 22 persons, among them nine children and two women.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights calls upon Gaza’s Ministry of Interior to establish effective procedures to put an end to the mishandling of weapons inside the Gaza Strip.
