What is believed to be a locally made stun grenade was thrown near the house of Dr.
Maher Issa Lateef Ayyad, 60, in the Ar-Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City at approximately 7.
20pm on Friday, 25 February 2011.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.
At the same time, Dr.
Ayyad received a threatening text message (SMS) on his cell phone with a threat.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, at approximately 7:20pm on Friday 25 February 2011, an explosion took place near the house of Dr.
Maher Ayyad in Gaza city.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
Two fragments of the stun grenade were found at the place of the explosion.
The police arrived to the location shortly after the explosion and initiated an investigation.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns this attack and threat launched at Dr Ayyad.
Al Mezan views the significance of the SMS that Dr.
Ayyad received with great concern and believes it to be motivated by religious ideas.
The SMS read “if you do not recant your grudge, injustice, and missionary activities, our reaction will be bigger and no one will help you” (unofficial translation by Al Mezan).
Al Mezan expresses strong concern for this kind of attack and threat which are of religious nature.
There is political, religious, and ideological diversity in society and Al Mezan views this kind of attack as an attempt to destroy this and impose one particular belief and opinion.
Al Mezan strongly condemns the attack and calls for investigations and for the results of these investigations to be fully disclosed.
