Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights welcomes the resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) yesterday 25 March 2011.
The resolution represents a significant step towards achieving justice and redress for the victims of Israel’s crimes during its ‘Operation Cast Lead’ aggression.
The resolution recommends the UN General Assembly to submit the report of the UN Fact-Finding Mission, which was chaired by the honorable Justice Richard Goldstone, to the Security Council with a recommendation to refer the Report to the International Court of Justice, and with a call on the Court’s Prosecutor to initiate an investigation into the file.
While commending the resolution, Al Mezan deplores the positions of the USA, United Kingdom and Slovakia for voting ‘No’ and the abstentions by all the rest of European Member States of the HRC.
The European Union’s position only serves to entrench the double standards and disregard of the legal and moral obligations on all States to ensure respect of international law, justice for the victims of its violations, and accountability for its violators.
This position has for long undermined justice and allowed for a culture of impunity; under which violations of international law have been on the increase.
Notably, 27 States voted in favour of the resolution, while three voted against and sixteen abstained.
