Short Link:
Whilst reporting on the attack on greenhouses supervised by the Palestinian Company for Economic Development in Mouraj area south of Khan Younis, photojournalist for Palestine TV Bassam Abdullah, 42, suffered an attack by police officers.
According to Abdullah's sworn testimony to Al Mezan, a group of Palestinian policemen approached him, threatening at gunpoint to destroy his camera if he tried to photograph the damaged greenhouses.
He added that a policeman obstructed his way while another tried to incite the armed group against Abdullah.
As the journalist moved to a south-western area in an attempt to continue filming the reportage, he was followed by another group of police and security officials.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights expresses solidarity with Bassam Abdullah, and condemns all procedures which might obstruct the freedom of expression in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT); it also highlights the inappropriate police reaction over the reporting on a violation of the law.
Thus, Al Mezan calls upon the PNA to impose the law, initiate investigations surrounding the incident and bring the responsible police officials to justice; policing apparatuses are obliged to protect the law in order to protect the freedom of expression and guarantee respect for the right to access and disseminate information according to the law.
