Petra:: Palestinian rights group calls for halt of Israeli escalation in Gaza

Gaza City, Aug 21 (Petra) -- A Palestinian human rights group on Sunday called for urgent international intervention to stop Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip which prompted fears of a wide-scale attack on the besieged territory.


The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Petra's reporter in Gaza, that the absence of international protection mechanisms and the continued politicization of human rights in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict had given Israel impunity and encouraged it to continue violations of the international humanitarian law.


It noted that the coastal enclave had been under a tight blockade for over four years that brought deterioration in human rights, services, particularly in the health sector which had been strained under a shortage of medical equipment, as well as tens of thousands of displaced people whose homes were demolished by the Israelis and the siege stopped in the way of rebuilding them.


The group warned that 'any new Israeli aggression' would further aggravate the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.


It demanded the world community, including the U.
N.
Security Council and the European Union, to intervene and stop Israeli assaults on Gaza.


The call came after a series of bloody air strikes and other assaults on Gaza by the Israeli military after a deadly cross-border attack in southern Israel on the border with Egypt on Thursday.
