Short Link:
At approximately 12:30pm on Saturday 8 August 2009, a fire erupted in a fuel store that belongs to Iyad Halawa in Jablaia town's central market.
It took the civil defense teams about three hours to put out the fire.
Nine people were sent to hospital suffering suffocation from inhaling the burning fuel smoke and burns; five of whom were from the civil defense teams.
Medical sources at Kamal Odwan Hospital described their wounds as light.
The store was completely burnt up and several adjacent shops were damaged.
According to Al Mezan's investigations, fuel peddlers usually store fuel in places near the places where they sell fuel in the streets and markets.
They do not show much concern about the safety of people in crowded areas where they sometimes store their fuel.
This obliges the authorities to intervene to prevent possible incidents that could end with catastrophes in Gaza's heavily populated area.
