At approximately 9:15pm on Saturday, 12 February 2022, medical sources at al-Shifa Hospital announced the death of Bassel Mohammed Shabat, 52, from wounds he sustained during a family dispute in Beit Hanoun in the North Gaza District.

Al Mezan’s field investigation shows that the dispute broke out between members of two families at 8:10pm, with reported use of firearms. As a result, Bassel Mohammed Shabat was killed and three other people including a child sustained moderate injuries, as reported by medical personnel at al-Shifa Hospital.

The police spokesperson Colonel Ayman Al-Batniji issued a press release confirming that the police intervened to restore order, arrested some of the shooters, seized the firearms and opened an investigation into the incident.

Al Mezan regrets the continued loss of life from episodes of internal violence in Gaza and reiterates its call on the relevant authorities to take serious measures to urgently limit the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. The authorities must uphold the rule of law to prevent parties to a dispute from attempting to circumvent the legal system. Authorities must launch a swift, thorough and credible investigation into the tragic event and hold those responsible to account through a sound legal process.
