Short Link:
A violent dispute broke out on Monday evening, 24 August 2020, in Al-Shati refugee camp, Gaza City. Al Mezan’s field investigation shows that the dispute broke out at approximately 6:50pm between members of two families and turned violent with use of live ammunition. As a result, Samer Nayef Ibrahim Al-Saidi, 28, was killed, and five others sustained moderate to serious injuries as reported by medical personnel at Al-Shifa Hospital. The police launched an investigation into the incident and arrested a number of suspects.
Al Mezan regrets Samer Al-Saidi’s death and the continued loss of life in internal violent incidents in Gaza, which gravely undermine the safety and security of the population. De facto authorities in Gaza, as duty-bearers under international law, must take urgent, serious and tangible measures to limit the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Al Mezan calls on the relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and prevent parties to a dispute from taking the law into their own hands. The authorities must launch a prompt, comprehensive and credible investigation into the tragic events and hold perpetrators to account through a sound legal process.
