Short Link:
Following the announcement of the results of the Egyptian elections, popular demonstrations celebrating the win of Dr.
Mohammed Mursi were held throughout the Gaza Strip.
There was heavy gunfire both before and during the demonstrations in celebration of the election results, which left one person dead and another 18 injured.
According to documentation carried out by the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, at approximately 5:30 pm on Sunday 24 June 2012, Mohammed Sa’eed Qeshtta, 25, died after sustaining a bullet wound to the head as he was driving his motorcycle on Al Mattar street in the As-Salam neighborhood in Rafah.
Another five persons were injured in different areas of Rafah.
Four other people were admitted to Kamal Odwan Hospital in North Gaza district between 5:45 pm and 7:05 pm on the same day after they were injured in their homes or places of work.
Nine people were admitted to Ash-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City starting at 5:45 pm on the same day.
All sustained injuries from bullets.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights supports the right of Palestinians, individually and in groups, to express their happiness, but holds that such expression should be limited to peaceful means that do not in any way damage the security, safety, or lives of other people.
Al Mezan regrets the death and injuries due to misuse of weapons and condemns this misuse of small arms, occurring several years after a ban was imposed.
Under the terms of this ban, weapons may not be used in expressions of joy or sadness.
In 2007, use of weapons was banned at funerals and weddings.
Al Mezan warns against complacence concerning the spread and misuse of small arms and light weapons, which has serious consequences for society.
Al Mezan calls on the Gazan government to promptly initiate effective and transparent investigations into these incidents.
Those whose involvement in weapons-related crimes is proven must be brought to justice in accordance with legal process without delay.
Al Mezan also calls on the Palestinian armed resistance groups and law enforcement officers to ensure that small arms are used only in law enforcement.
It also calls on the Palestinian armed resistance groups to control the use of weapons and to avoid their use in internal matters.
