IOF Escalates Its Attacks on Gaza; Kills and Injures 10 Persons and Attacks Fishermen, Al Mezan Condemns and Calls on International Community to Intervene

Over the last two days, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have escalated their attacks on the Gaza Strip.
 The IOF has continued its limited incursions into areas near the borders and attacked farmers and residential areas in five separate incidents.
 As a result, 10 persons were killed or injured, including a woman; 11 residential houses were partially damaged; and two factories were totally destroyed.
 The IOF has also attacked Palestinian fishermen seven times, arrested two, confiscated a boat, and damaged one boat and one fishing net.
 Today, Tuesday 19 June 2012, the IOF announced its responsibility for the killing of two Palestinians in the early morning hours; the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights has not yet been able to verify the identities of the victims and the details of this incident.
 Al Mezan has documented the other Israeli attacks to date, which are described chronologically below.
At approximately 6:30 am on Monday 18 June 2012, four tanks and three armored bulldozers moved about 400 meters into the Swelim and Qarmout areas near the northern separation fence east of Erez crossing.
 The bulldozers leveled lands that have frequently been razed before.
 The IOF also opened fire at Palestinian farmers working in their fields in the area.
 No casualties or injuries were reported, but farmers were frightened and abandoned their work.
 At approximately 12:10 pm on the same day, the IOF withdrew from the area.
At approximately 10:45 am on Monday 18 June 2012, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile targeting two young men on a motorcycle north of the destroyed agricultural college to the north of Beit Hanoun, North Gaza district.
 As a result, Mohammed Rafeq Ahmed Shabat, 25, and Ismail Mohammed Abdullah Abu Oda, 23, both from Beit Hanonun, were killed.
 Medical sources reported that the two bodies were dismembered.
 According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, the bodies were found in an open area about 1,000 meters away from the northern separation fence.
  The two were members of the Palestinian resistance.
At approximately 6:10 pm on the same day, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile targeting three young men in the Al Wad area near Erez crossing, north of Beit Hanoun, North Gaza district.
 As a result, two persons were killed and one person was critically injured.
Al Mezan has identified those killed as: Abdullah Hasan Ahmed Az-Za’aneen, 22; and Jihad Kamel Mohammed Abu Shabab, 23; both were from Beit Hanoun.
 According to medical sources, their bodies were dismembered.
 Al Mezan’s field investigations indicate that the two who died were from the ranks of the Palestinian resistance fighters and that they were about 1,500 meters away from the northern separation fence when they were killed.
At approximately 6:00 am on the same day, Israeli gunboats patrolling the Gazan sea opened fire at 70 Palestinian fishing boats opposite Deir Al Balah.
 The firing scared the fishermen on the boats and they sailed to land immediately.
 No casualties or injuries were reported.
At approximately 5:00 am on the same day, Israeli naval vessels opened fire on Palestinian fishing boats off the coast north of the Al Waha resort, which is in the As-Sudaniya area west Beit Lahiya, North Gaza district.
 The IOF then pursued the fishermen in small inflatable boats.
 No casualties or injuries were reported.
 The firing continued until 7:15 am on the same day.
At approximately 3:00 am on the same day, Israeli warships opened fire on Palestinian boats off the coast of Khan Younis, inside the IOF-imposed fishing zone.
 No casualties or injuries were reported.
At approximately 11:35 pm on Sunday 17 June 2012, Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at an iron workshop near the Hamza mosque in the Kherbet Al ‘Adas area in Rafah.
 As a result, the 70-square meter workshop was destroyed and five persons were injured.
 Al Mezan has identified them as follows:   ·         Amani Ismail Salah Mansour, 25, who sustained critical injuries and was referred to Ash-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City; ·         Her husband Rami Shawqi Mansour, 25; ·         Murad Hasan Abu Shbeika, 30; ·         Yousif Hamad An-Nahal, 56; and ·         His brother Sami, 50.
     Medical sources described the injuries of the latter three as moderate.
 All are from Rafah.
  In addition, a furniture factory sustained critical physical damages in the attack, and 11 adjacent houses, home to 61 people, including 26 children, were partially damaged.
At approximately 11:00 pm on Sunday 17 June 2012, an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a military training site belonging to one of the Palestinian factions south of Gaza City.
 No casualties or injuries were reported.
At approximately 10:15 pm on the same day, the IOF opened heavy and sporadic fire at Palestinian houses in the Swelim and Al Ghazalat areas near the separation fence.
 No casualties or injuries were reported, but women and children were terrified.
At approximately 8:00 pm on the same day, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gazan sea opened fire on Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of the As-Sudaniya area.
 According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, the IOF ships surrounded two Palestinian fishing boats, opened fire, and then forced two fishermen to take off their clothes and swim towards them.
 The IOF arrested Ashraf Subhi Sa’adallah, 30, and his brother Mohammed, 26, who are from Jabaliya, and took them to an unknown destination.
 A second Palestinian boat, owned by Mahmoud Ahmed Mattar, 22, managed to flee the area, but its engine was damaged by Israeli fire.
  The IOF also damaged a fishing net belonging to Mahmoud Mattar and Mohammed As-Souri, 20.
At approximately 6:45 am and 8:30 pm on the same day, the Israeli navy fired on Palestinian fishing boats off the coast northwest of Al Waha.
  The firing frightened the fishermen and they sailed to land immediately.
  No casualties or injuries were reported.
At approximately 2:00 am on the same day, Israeli naval vessels opened fire on Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of Khan Younis district.
 No casualties or injuries were reported.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns Israel’s almost daily attacks and its escalation of violence against Palestinian civilians and their properties in the border areas, the sea, and what are known as the “Access-Restricted Areas.
”  Al Mezan warns of the grave impacts of Israel’s efforts to enforce a “security buffer zone” and its deprivation of Palestinian farmers’ access to their fields.
  Therefore, Al Mezan calls on the international community to intervene to end these Israeli violations and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territory, the Gaza Strip in particular.
