On Tuesday 22 May 2012, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opened a workshop titled “Juvenile Justice under National Law and International Conventions,” held at the Future Eve Association in Rafah.
About 35 persons—housewives and university graduates—participated in the workshop.
Lamiyaa Abu Harb, manager of the association, attended the workshop and thanked Al Mezan for its efforts to foster a culture of human rights in Gaza.
She added that she hoped Al Mezan would conduct more such workshops on juvenile justice issues.
Yihya Mhareb, a project lawyer, opened the workshop by welcoming the participants.
He expressed his hope that the workshop would enhance the participants’ knowledge of children’s rights under Palestinian and international law.
The participants were introduced to Palestinian Children’s Rights Law No.
7 of 2004; Palestinian Labor Law No.
7 of 2000; Juvenile Criminal Law No.
2 of 1937; the Palestinian Basic Law as amended in 2005; and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Administration of Juvenile Justice of 1985.
This workshop constitutes one component of the “Enhancing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Violations in the Gaza Strip” project, implemented by Al Mezan with support from the United Nations Development Program - Program of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP, Rule of Law Program).
