Short Link:
Under continuous suffering of the Palestinian People from the Israeli occupation measures of collective punishment in the OPTs, the Gaza Strip witnessed sorrowful incidents yesterday, Monday 7 October 2002.
Four Palestinians were reported killed and thirty injured in clashes with the Palestinian Police.
These acts come one day after the murder of Colonel Rajih Abu Lihyeh, Chief Commander of Discipline and Interference Police in the Palestinian National Authority by persons from the Aqil family.
The murderer was announced to be a revenge for the killing of Yusif Muhammad Aqil, who was killed by the Palestinian Police on 7 October 2001 during a students demonstration rejecting the war on Afghanistan in Gaza City.
Al Mezan is gravely concerned by these sorrowful acts and calls all the parties to self control and for full respect for the law.
The Center emphasizes that such incidents should be dealt with in court and in full compliance with the Palestinian law.
Al Mezan calls for the following:
An independent investigation in the conditions of the killing of Abu Lihyeh and four other Palestinian citizens , which should be carried out soon and revealing the facts.
The restriction of the use of force and the punishment of those officers who are responsible for the use of excessive force.
Bringing those who breached the law and initiated the clashes to justice.
