At approximately 2:20 p.
m.
on Sunday 31 July 2011, three police officers and two young men were admitted to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
Medical sources describedone of the officers’ injuries as critical.
A few hours later, the hospital announced the death of thisofficer, Majed Hamdan Karam, 23, who lived in the At-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, at midday on Sunday 31 July 2011, a police force—traveling in two police cars and accompanied by policewomen, representatives of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Awqaf, and a bulldozer—arrived at Wadi Gaza village to execute a judicial order to evacuate a plot of agricultural land inhabited by several families.
The land is owned by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Awqaf.
The bulldozer began uprooting olive trees and demolishing several homes when residents of the houses and other people gathered to prevent the police from executing the judicial order.
A verbal dispute started between the police force and the protestors.
The police arrested four persons from two families.
As the police force withdrew from the area, gunfire broke out.
As a result, one police officer died and two others were injured.
