At approximately 10am on Friday 24 July 2009, a woman (F.
A.
) arrived at Kamal Odwan Hospital in Beit Lahyia.
Medical sources said that the woman had been severely beaten.
According to police sources the woman's father handed himself in to the police and admitted that, on Thursday, he had beaten his daughter to death.
The body of the woman was found after the police searched his house.
The father and three of his sons were arrested by the police.
Al Mezan learned that the woman had been divorced since 2005 and she had five children.
According to field investigations, the killing was carried out on grounds related to 'preserving' the honor of the family.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns this crime and asserts that the leniency with which the authority treats the perpetrators of such crimes, who usually allege that they were acting to preserve the honor of the family, has contributed to the noticeable increase in honor killings.
In 2009 alone, nine people have been killed, five of them were women.
Al Mezan Center is gravely concerned that the perpetrators of such crimes by alleging that they are acting to preserve the honor of the family are able to escape penalty.
In the light of the above, Al Mezan calls for 'honor crimes' including killings to be treated in the same way as a murder crime that cannot be lawfully justified and is not subject to extenuating excuses.
