Short Link:
At around 4:50 pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, Israeli warplanes targeted two makeshift tent camps sheltering internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis City with four missiles. The targeted IDP camps are the “Al-Salam Camp” on Street 5, which shelters over 20 tents, and the “Al-Mohibbin Camp” on Al-Astal Street, hosting more than 150 tents. The two camps are approximately 150 meters apart. This area is one of the most densely populated by displaced families, who have endured multiple waves of displacement. Thousands of individuals have sought refuge there. The attack killed 22 Palestinians, including eight children and three women, and injured 18 others. Several tents were destroyed, and many more sustained severe damage from flying debris and shrapnel.
A survivor of the attack recounted the following to Al Mezan:
"I was visiting my aunt in the Al-Salam camp in the Mawasi area when I felt tremendous pressure, followed by a burst of dust, debris, and thick smoke. It felt like my body was about to break apart from the intensity of the blast. Then, I saw massive flames engulfing the area. In shock and disbelief, I started hearing screams and cries for help from people in the camp, which houses approximately 20 makeshift tents and tin-sheet rooms, all occupied by displaced families from across Gaza. I rushed to my aunt’s tent to check on her and saw a woman torn apart, her body still burning with flames, and two children lying nearby. A few people arrived to help me leave the area, and I was shouting and asking about my aunt. One person reassured me that they had rescued her and that she was safe. I was later taken to Nasser Hospital, covered in dust and ash, with shrapnel wounds on my left foot. After receiving treatment, I was able to check on my aunt and learned that her sister-in-law and her two daughters had died in the attack, as they were also displaced at the same location. The following day, I returned to the area and was horrified by the devastation left behind".
