Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the continued violations of the rule of law in the Gaza Strip, particularly those involving family disputes and retaliation. In the most recent incident, one person was killed, and nine others were injured during a fight that erupted amongst relatives of a family in Al-Maghazi refugee camp, in the Middle Area District.

According to Al Mezan’s field information, at around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 25 April 2023, a dispute broke out amongst relatives of a family in Al-Maghazi refugee camp, in the Middle Area District, with the reported use of firearms. As a result, Ramadan Abu Jalal, 45, was killed by two bullets, one of which was in the chest, and nine relatives were injured. Medical sources at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah described three of the injuries as serious.

The Palestinian police intervened and stopped the fight, arrested those suspected of firing shots, confiscated the firearms, and launched an investigation into the incident.

In a separate incident, on Monday, 24 April 2023, a 20-year-old young man sustained two bullet wounds in his lower limbs during a family feud that erupted in Deir Al-Balah City, in the Middle Area District. Medical sources described his injury as moderate.

Al Mezan regrets the killing of Abu Jalal and the continued loss of life in incidents of internal violence in Gaza and reiterates its call on the relevant authorities to take serious measures to urgently limit the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. Authorities must uphold the rule of law and prevent parties to a dispute from attempting to circumvent the legal system. A swift, thorough, and credible investigation into the tragic event must also be launched and those responsible must be held accountable through a sound legal process.
