At 4pm on Friday, 10 August 2018, Israeli forces based in monitoring sites to the east of Abu Safia area in east Jabalia refugee camp opened fire and launched tear-gas canisters against hundreds of Palestinians who joined the Great Return March demonstration in the area. 32 demonstrators, including seven children, were injured, one of them Khaled Ayoub, a 56-year old paramedic who was hit in the back with a tear-gas canister. Casualties ranged in severity from moderate to serious, according to medical sources at the Indonesia and Al-Awda hospitals. 28 of the injured were hit by live fire in different parts of their bodies, and four were hit by tear-gas canisters. Field-based medical teams provided treatment to a number of demonstrators who suffered from breathing difficulties amid Israeli forces’ heavy use of tear gas. The Israeli shooting continued until the evening of the same day.
