Four Killed and 291 Injured in Israeli Use of Excessive Power to Disperse Demonstrators

On Friday, 30 March 2018, thousands of youth, women and children from various areas in Gaza city joined the “Great Return March” demonstration in Malaka area in eastern Al Zaytoun neighborhood in eastern Gaza city. Held about 700 meters away from the border fence, the demonstration has been called for by a national committee of Palestinian factions to reaffirm the right of refugees to return to their homes from which they were expelled in 1948 and 1967. Israeli forces located on the eastern borders of the Gaza Strip opened fire and launched tear gas grenades at demonstrators who tried to get close the border, threw stones, and set tires on fire. Four protesters were killed: Mohammed Abu Amr, 26, Jihad Farina, 34, Mahmoud Rohmi, 33, and Ahmed Odah, 19. 291 other demonstrators were injured, including 60 children and nine women. 143 of these casualties were wounded by live fire, 124 by rubber bullets, 3 by tear-gas grenades, and eight from inhaling tear gas. 13 of them suffered from bruises, fractures, and wounds as they were trying to escape Israeli shooting. Medical sources described the injuries as ranging from light and moderate to serious. The shooting continued until the evening.
