In the morning of Monday, 2 April 2018, Israeli forces located on the eastern borders of Malaka area of Al Zaitoun neighborhood in eastern Gaza city opened fire and launched tear-gas canisters at tens of protesters joining the “Great Return March” demonstration near the separation fence. The demonstration has been called for by a national committee of Palestinian factions to reaffirm Palestinians’ right to return to their homes, from which they were expelled in 1948 and 1967. Israeli use of live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear-gas canisters led to the injury of eight protesters—two by live fire, four by tear-gas canisters, and two by inhaling tear gas. Doctors at Al Shifa hospital assessed their injuries to range from light to moderate. Israeli shooting at protesters continued until the evening of the same day.
