At 7:30pm on Friday, 30 March 2018, Israeli forces located on the southeastern borders of Burij refugee camp in the Middle Area governorate opened fire and launched tear-gas canisters at thousands of protesters who demonstrated in eastern Burij as part of the ‘Great Return March’, called for by a national committee of Palestinian factions to mark Land Day. During the demonstration, protesters threw stones at Israeli forces, which responded by using live fire and tear-gas canisters against protesters, two of whom were killed: Abdulqader Mardi Al Hawajerha, 42-year old resident of Nusairat refugee camp who was shot in the abdomen, and Naji Abdullah Abu Hujayyer, 24-year old resident of Burij refugee camp who too was shot in the abdomen. 177 other protesters, including 33 children and seven women, were injured during Israeli shooting. The total number of casualties caused by Israeli use of live fire was 166, including 30 children, whose injuries ranged from light to moderate. 15 casualties were referred to Al Shifa hospital in Gaza city to receive the necessary medical treatment; seven of them were critically wounded. 11 other protesters, including three children, seven women, and a female journalist, were harmed by the tear gas fired by Israeli forces. Israeli forces continued opening fire at protesters until 7:30pm on the same day.
