14-year-old Belal Bassam Mesha’al from Deir Al Balah was an affectionate and loving child. He helped his mother with the cleaning and cooking and he helped his father with the gardening. They had a piece of land where they grew vegetables. His biggest wish was to get a bicycle.
Belal was asleep in his house when it was hit by an Israeli missile on 31 July 2014. His mother ran into the children’s room and found Belal unconscious on the floor. She tried to wake him up but couldn’t. They rushed him to Al Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al Balah in the middle of the Gaza Strip where he was taken into the intensive care unit. He was kept there for four days after which the doctors decided that he needed to be transferred to Egypt for more advanced treatment. Belal died before the transfer could take place.
