IOF Open Fire at Peaceful Demonstration in Commemoration of the 63rd Anniversary of Al Nakba

At approximately 11:40am on Sunday 15 May 2011, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) opened fire and artillery shells at dozens of Palestinians who gathered near the Gaza-Israel border fence to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, which marks the forced displacement of Palestinians in 1948 when the State of Israel was created.
As a result, dozens of people were injured.
According to Al Mezan's field investigations, the IOF fired four artillery shells at the demonstrators.
Israeli snipers who were in concrete watchtowers opened direct fire at children who were near the protestors.
Israeli helicopters also opened fire at demonstrators.
As a result, 104 persons were injured, including 31 children and two journalists.
They were admitted to Kamal Odwan Hospital, Balsam Hospital, and Al Awda Hospital in North Gaza district.
At least three of the injured persons sustained critical injuries.
The IOF continued to fire at the demonstrators when this news was being published at 2:33pm on Sunday 15 May 2011.
