Food Poisoning at UNRWA School in Beit Hanoun

At approximately 11:30am on Sunday 3 April 2011, 28 school students of the UNRWA Beit Hanoun Preparatory Girls School were admitted to Beit Hanoun Hospital, after being subjected to  a case of sudden illness.
In his affidavit to Al Mezan, Dr.
Jamil Mohammed Ali Suliman, director of Beit Hanoun Hospital, said that the girls sustained a case of simple food poisoning and that they suffered from diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain.
He described their health conditions as between light and moderate.
He said that they would be kept at the Hospital for three hours for medical observation.
According to Al Mezan's field investigations, the girls were given packs of milk under a nutrition program run by a UN agency.
At approximately 9:30am on the same day, the School's messenger started to distribute the packs.
He was surprised when he noticed that some of the packs had expired.
He instantly stopped distributing the packs and informed the School administration.
The school administration and the messenger started to recollect the packs.
After that, some students started to feel sick.
The sick students were carried to the Beit Hanoun Hospital.
According to Al Mezan's field worker, the milk packs had expired on 2 April 2011.
The directorates of Education and Health opened an investigation into the incident, as well as the Ministries of Health and Interior.
