10am, on 6 April 2008, dozens of janitors and maintenance workers in the municipality of Gaza protested in front of the Legislative Council in northern Gaza City.
They protested against a decision issued by the Presidency of the Gaza Municipality on 5 April 2008.
This decision suspended the work of nearly 360 janitors and maintenance workers and gave a one-month notice of impending lay-offs.
According to the workers, the municipality justifies this decision by citing lack of financial resources and increase of financial constraints.
It is noteworthy that the decision is limited to workers who work on a day-to-day basis and do not receive benefits.
