News Brief: Al Mezan congratulates Director Issam Younis on his election as Deputy Chair of the Arab Organization for Human Rights

On 23-24 July 2022, a delegation from Al Mezan Center from Human Rights led by Director General Issam Younis, Deputy Director Samir Zaqout, and Field Research Unit Coordinator Yamen al-Madhoun travelled to Cairo to attend the eleventh meeting of the General Assembly of the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR).


The AOHR is an international non-governmental and not-for-profit organization established in 1983 and based in Cairo. Its objective is to promote respect for human rights in the Arab world according to international standards.


The meeting was attended by 24 human rights organizations from 23 countries, and elections were held for 20 positions as members of the Board of Trustees until 2025. Issam Younis was elected Deputy Chair of the organization’s Board of Trustees and Alaa Shalabi was reappointed as the Chair of the Board for a second term.


In addition, Kuwaiti Maha Al-Bajras was reappointed as Secretary-General, Libyan Abdelmenem Al-Hor as Board Treasurer, and Moroccan BouBakr Larko, Egyptian Nivin Mesed, and Emirati Mohammed Al-Kabi as members of the Executive Committee. 


Mohammed Faeq and Mohsen Awad were honored during the meeting for their historical role in the organization, and a memorial service was held for the late member of the Board of Trustees, Hafez Abu Sada.


The General Assembly meeting was held after the conclusion of the international conference "Challenges for Privacy Protection in the Context of Artificial Intelligence," organized by the AOHR in cooperation with the Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights in Egypt, with the participation of experts in law, communication technology, media, and human rights.
