On Tuesday, 1 September 2020, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights submitted a request to the Attorney General in Gaza to investigate claims (posted on news websites) alleging that the security services in Gaza have closed 72 social media accounts on the grounds of fighting spread of misinformation in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

In its request, Al Mezan called for ensuring that legal procedures taken by law enforcement personnel during the current COVID-19 lockdown in Gaza be in line with the Palestinian Basic Law and the Public Health Law, and urged the competent authorities to promote public liberties and respect human rights. Duty-bearers shall limit imposed restrictions on such liberties to the extent strictly required by the exigencies of the current state of emergency.
