On 10 February 2008, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights held a series of educational activities aimed at raising the awareness of the disabled and those who works in the rehabilitation field in Gaza City.
The activities, held in collaboration with Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, began with an educational lecture entitled "Human Rights Concepts" with the assistance of a sign language interpreter from the Society.
Twenty girls and boys with disabilities attended the lecture, which intended to familiarize the participants with the basic concepts of human rights, especially the rights of the disabled.
This lecture is part of a series of activities that include four educational lectures and training courses, which will be implemented in February 2008 for people with different disabilities.
Employees at the Society will participate in a training session that will last for six days.
Those activities are designed to familiarize the participants with the theoretical framework of human rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), particularly those relating to economic, social and cultural rights (ESC) of the disabled.
In addition, they will be exposed to the most important concepts that contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights and the chief international human rights conventions.
The Center's trainers will give instruction on the mechanisms established by both IHL and Palestinian Law for the promotion and protection of these rights in accordance with international standards, especially those relating to the category of the disabled.
