On Sunday 19 February 2012, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights organized a lecture for prisoners at the rehabilitation center in Middle Gaza district entitled “Prisoners’ Rights under Palestinian Laws.
” The lecture targeted 130 prisoners.
Police Major Iyad Salman and a number of other police officers also attended the session.
This lecture constitutes one component of the “Enhancing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Violations in the Gaza Strip” project, implemented by Al Mezan with support from the United Nations Development Program - Program of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP, Rule of Law Program).
Advocate Rana Abu Ramadan opened the session by welcoming the participants and thanking the director and the staff of the rehabilitation center for their cooperation.
She emphasized the importance of the session’s content, which covered rights and guarantees for prisoners under international principles and Palestinian law.
She also discussed Al Mezan’s role in following up on the situation of prisoners at rehabilitation centers.
Advocate Alaa’ Skafi, an Al Mezan lawyer, presented the lecture and discussed rights and guarantees to prisoners under the Palestinian Basic Law, Criminal Procedures Law No.
3 of 2001, and Reform and Rehabilitation Centers Law No.
6 of 1998.
After the lecture, prisoners described violations of the law that they have experienced at reform and rehabilitation centers.
They called for improving situations in detention centers and for adherence to the legal procedures requiring that criminal suspects be subject to public prosecution before the concerned judicial bodies.
