Yesterday, 26/06/2001, a quarrel took place between the “Shurrab” and “Barbakh” families in Khan Younis, located in the Gaza Strip.
A four-month old infant died as a result of the incident.
Eyewitnesses stated that the dispute began five days ago between two young men who sell vegetables in Khan Younis.
One of them pertained to the Shurrab family and the other to the Barbakh family.
Each claimed the right to sell his goods in the same place.
Following this incident, the two families became embroiled in the quarrel.
Yesterday at 12:00 noon (9:00 GMT), the incident reached a highly dangerous stage, when members of the two families physically attacked each other using a variety of fighting implements.
Subsequently, at 2:00 p.
m.
, the house of Mohammed Ghazy Shurrab was set on fire.
His four-month old son, Firas, was inside the house at the time.
The infant sustained severe burns and suffocated.
He died afterwards.
23 people were wounded during the fighting.
Al- Mezan Center considers the incident, as well as other similar incidents that have taken place in the Gaza Strip, to be highly dangerous.
It calls upon all parties, especially the two families, to demonstrate self-control in order to protect the lives of their families.
Self- control and solidarity among the Palestinian people are extremely necessary during this time in which the Palestinian people are suffering from the impact of continued Israeli aggression.
Al- Mezan Center requests the members of the two families to abstain from taking the initiative to bypass the law.
In addition, it calls for the following:
Reinforcement of the rule of law.
Securing civilian courts their full authority in order to ensure that justice prevails.
