Lecture on the Rights of the Child and Education:
Place/Date: Zaid Ibn Haritha Primary School, Beit Lahia, 23 February, 2004.
Participants: 30 parents, teachers and students.
Speaker: Samir Zaqout, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights
Objective: To introduce the participants to the rights of the child and education, and reinforce cooperation between school and family to ensure respect of children’s rights.
Main themes: The notions of human rights and children rights; which rights must be given to children; how can family and school ensure best respect of these rights; what rights are violated in Palestine; the right to education; roles of school and family (discussion).
Outcome: The school is located in a remote area in the north of the Gaza Strip where access to this kind of information is not available. Both teachers and parents had false perceptions, and in some cases negative attitudes towards human rights, which was parlty corrected in the lecture.
