On Friday, 6 April 2018, thousands of youth, women and children from various areas in Khan Younis joined a demonstration held to the east of the town of Khuzaa. The demonstration, organized about 300 meters away from the separation barrier, has been called for by a national committee of Palestinian factions to reaffirm the right of refugees to return to their homes, from which they were expelled in 1948 and 1967. The Israeli forces located on the eastern borders of the Gaza Strip opened fire and launched tear gas grenades at demonstrators, who tried to get close to the fence, threw stones, and set tires on fire. The shooting led to the death of Osama Khamis Musallam Qadeih, 39. Also, at 1:45pm on the same day, Yaser Abdel Rahman Mostafa Mortaga, a 31-year old photojournalist working for Ain Media Company for Broadcast and Arts Production, was wounded in the left abdominal side. At 1:20a.m on the next day, he was announced dead as a result of his wounds. Israeli shooting at demonstrators continued until the evening, when 150 protesters had been injured by live bullets, including 20 children, two women, and one paramedic. Casualties were taken to Naser and the European Gaza hospitals for treatment.
