On Sunday, 3 December 2017 at 3:40 am, Fareed Sobhi Abu Qamar, 50, was brought to the Indonesian Hospital in the North Gaza district. Abu Qamar was being detained at a police station in Jabalia refugee camp following a family dispute when he reportedly had a heart attack. The incident must be investigated.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, Abu Qamar was detained following a dispute that broke out within the Abu Qamar extended family near the Al-Trans neighborhood of Jabalia at 2:30 am. The police intervened in the dispute and detained a number of family members. Approximately one hour into his detention, Abu Qamar’s health rapidly deteriorated and he was rushed to the Indonesian Hospital. He was declared dead by medical staff upon arrival.
Abu Qamar’s body was taken to Al Shifa hospital for forensic analysis, whereupon the doctors stated that his death was the result of a heart attack. In the meantime, in an interview with Al Mezan’s field researcher, the head of the police station in Jabalia stated that shortly into his detention Abu Qamar reported feeling short of breath and was then taken to hospital.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights calls on all relevant authorities to immediately investigate Abu Qamar’s death in a thorough and open manner. Al Mezan stresses that every death in detention raises questions that obligate the authorities to investigate and take legal action on.
