Fifteen Years in a Row: Al Mezan Delivers Annual “Legal Skill Development” Training

On 29 November 2017, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights concluded our annual training titled, “Legal Skill Development across International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, and Palestinian Law” for lawyers. For the fifteenth year in a row, Al Mezan’s Training and Mass Communication unit implemented the six-month course, which provided 70 lawyers with 150 hours of theoretical training and 25 hours of practical training, during which the participants visited various human rights organizations as well as detention and rehabilitation centers.

 

In the closing ceremony, Mr. Issam Younis, general director of Al Mezan, spoke to the lawyers about the situation of human rights in Gaza and the urgent need to do more work to promote international legal principles. “This training is part of our continued commitment to promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Gaza,” said Mr. Younis. “These efforts are critical within the Palestinian struggle against the occupation and the pursuit of human rights.” He added that “lawyers have an important role to play in the pursuit of justice. Therefore, lawyers must be well acquainted with international legal concepts”.

 

Mrs. Shirin Al Shobaki, Al Mezan’s Training and Mass Communication Unit coordinator, stated that she “hoped that the training added to the participants theoretical knowledge and practical experience”. She added that Al Mezan would welcomes an opportunity for collaboration with the lawyers.

 

The training was held in Roots Hotel in Gaza City and is part of Al Mezan’s core program, which aims to promote the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.
