On Friday, 27 October 2017, an explosive device was detonated in Gaza’s Middle Area district in an apparent assassination attempt on General Tawfiq Abu Naim, head of the security forces in Gaza. The 55-year-old general was one of two people moderately injured in the incident.
According to Al Mezan’s documentation, the device exploded as General Abu Naim was about to enter his personal vehicle shortly after attending prayers at the Abu Al-Hssain mosque in Al Nuseirat refugee camp. General Abu Naim was brought to the Shuhada Al Aqsa Hospital at 1.20pm with light to moderate shrapnel wounds, and was later referred to Al Shifa Hospital for further treatment. The 26-year old bystander, Ahmed Khaled Abu Hjayir from Al Nuseirat camp, sustained a moderate leg injury. The police launched an investigation into the incident.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights calls on all relevant authorities in Gaza to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice in support of the rule of law. Al Mezan urges all parties to show restraint, and to reject all forms of violence, which could threaten the security of Gaza’s citizens, hamper the reconciliation efforts, and undermine the rule of law.
