Israeli Air Forces Strike Targets in the Gaza Strip Injuring Four Civilians

09-08-2017 07:26

Gaza City -- On Wednesday, 9 August 2017, Israeli Air Forces (IAF) launched air attacks on various parts of the northern Gaza Strip targeting military sites and facilities. The attacks caused injury to civilians and spread fear among many. Al Mezan condemns these attacks and calls upon international community to ensure protection of civilians and respect of international humanitarian law.

According to Al Mezan’s monitoring, four missiles were fired at 1:15am on Wednesday, 9 August 2017, targeting a site for an armed group in the south-west of the North Gaza district. The strikes caused material damage to the Palestinian intelligence facilities called ‘Al Safeena’ (the Ship). Doctors at Al Shifa hospital reported moderate to serious injuries to four civilians, including Mohammed Suhail Qasim, 26, who sustained a serious head injury.

At 1:35 am, the IAF targeted another military site located in Um Al-Nasir village in North Gaza, destroying the site. No injuries were reported.

The attacka come following reports that a missile was fired from Gaza into Israel.

Al Mezan reiterates its condemnation of this latest military escalation and the physical and psychological harm that it caused to civilians, particularly children.

Al Mezan warns that these developments have the potential to spark a new cycle of violence, in which civilians would inevitably suffer serious harm.

Considering the evident absence of accountability and the continued failure by international community to uphold the rules of international law, Al Mezan calls upon international community—particularly the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention—to act to stop further escalation, and to protect the civilian population and their property in accordance with international law.
