Al Mezan Concludes a Training Course for Lawyers on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment

On Thursday, 26 May 2016, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights concluded a training course entitled “Torture and Ill-treatment in IHL and Human Rights” within the Center’s combating torture and ill-treatment project. Attendance was comprised of 30 practicing and trainee lawyers. The training course was held at Al Commodore Hotel in Gaza City.

The five-days-training included sessions on the International Bill of Human Rights; Convention against Torture; monitoring and documentation mechanisms, the role of human rights organizations in monitoring and reporting on torture, and pursuing legal initiatives; the role of healthcare professions in detecting and combating torture; the psychological and behavioral effects that torture has on victims; means and methods of torture, particularly those prevalent in Israel and Palestine; redress for torture victims under Israeli domestic law and Israeli impunity; redress for torture victims under Palestinian Law; and regional and international means of redress.  

Mervat Al Nahhal, the Head of the Legal Unit at Al Mezan, thanked the participants for their commitment and performance during the course and handed them certificates. She encouraged them to be defenders of torture victims. She hoped that the training helped them to recognize the importance of combating torture and other cruel and inhumane treatment.

Participants thanked Al Mezan for organizing training courses that contribute to increasing their capacity to defend and respect human rights.
