Today 10 August 2015 marks the first anniversary of the killing of our colleague Anwar Al Za’anin, one of the staff members of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, by the Israeli forces. On this day, Al Mezan remembers Anwar and expresses its deep regrets for losing him in such an unlawful Israeli attack. Hundreds of civilians were killed by Israeli forces in attacks that violate the principles of the international law.
According to Al Mezan’s documentation, at approximately 1:20 pm on Sunday 10 August 2014, an Israeli drone fired a missile at Anwar Al Za'anin, 43, as he was speaking with water department staff from the municipality of Beit Hanoun in North Gaza district. The staff was repairing water lines stalled by shelling by the Israeli forces at the entrance of Al Qarman Street close to Anwar's house. As a result, Anwar was fatally wounded, and two water technicians, Majdi Shabat, 41, and Sufian Abu Herbeed, 40, were moderately wounded. Anwar was transferred to Al Shifa hospital in Gaza city where his death was pronounced at approximately 5:00 pm on the same day.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, Anwar Al Za’anin went to the municipality crew to ask them to repair the water line feeding his house. He was riding his motorcycle and moments after he arrived, the missile was fired at him. It is worth mentioning that Anwar and his family had left their house, which had been exposed to Israeli shelling, and fled to Jabalia refugee camp. Anwar went back to bring basic needs to his family from their house.
Al Mezan remembers with much grief our colleague Anwar; the family of Mr. Issam Younis, director of Al Mezan; the family of Dr. Adnan Al Hajjar, director of the research and research; the family of Al Mezan’s accountant Wael Ahmed, the family of Al Mezan’s lawyer Alaa Al Skafi and the colleague Mohammed Al Dali, and also remembers all the civilians victims of the aggression who were killed by the Israeli forces in different Israeli attacks.
Al Mezan also remembers all the innocent people who were killed in unlawful attacks launched by the Israeli forces last summer. Al Mezan emphasizes that efforts to bring those who committed, or ordered committed, these crimes to justice, are underway.
Al Mezan also reiterates its calls on the international community, particularly the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention, to ensure respect for legal obligations according to articles (146) to prosecute those responsible for grave breaches of international humanitarian law, and to end the state of immunity, which Israel, the occupying power, enjoys. Accountability and justice are the only means that could prevent the recurrence of such crimes.
