Thousands of Palestinian Authority employees received deductions of up to 1,000 ILS mistakenly withheld from their salaries.
The employees did not have the overdue payments to the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company that were stated as the reason for the deductions.
This mistake was noted by the Energy and Natural Resources Authority in Ramallah in a press release on Tuesday 19 March 2013.
The Authority has stated that the future deductions of PA salaries will be limited to employees who have outstanding payments to the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company and whose monthly consumption is more than 170 ILS.
The Authority stated that each deduction will equal 100 ILS in addition to the 170 ILS owed, and will affect around 11,000 employees.
The press release also stated that an amount of 500 ILS will be deducted from 160 employees whose monthly consumption is more than 1,000 ILS and up to 25,000 ILS.
This deduction is to oblige those employees to pay the outstanding amounts and to reduce their electricity usage.
Al Mezan calls on the Ministry of Finance and the Energy and Natural Resources Authority to correct their mistake in excessive deductions and urges the Authority to establish mechanisms that ensure the commitment of payment for services received.
Further, the inconsistent and often unreliable electricity and water services are said to impact the lives of tens of thousands of people.
Al Mezan urges the Authority to develop their systems and procedures to ensure the protection of the vulnerable population.
