Al Mezan Welcomes Delaying Local Councils’ Elections in the West Bank

23-08-2011 00:00

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights welcomes the President Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to postpone the local commissions’ elections in the West Bank, announced on Monday 22 August 2011.
Al Mezan reasserts its position, which it had announced in a position paper in February this year.
Free and impartial elections necessarily require national agreement and a stable atmosphere that can guarantee the participation of all political powers and independent characters, regardless their political or ideological opinion, and securing respect of freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly.
These requirements are not possible within the current internal Palestinian split in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Al Mezan emphasizes that the postponement decision must be accompanied by serious and real efforts to achieve Palestinian national reconciliation and uniting the Palestinian political system.
This unity must be built on a strong democratic basis in order for elections in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to renew the legality of not only the local government, but also the entire Palestinian Authority institutions.
