Israeli occupation forces (IOF) continue to target civilians and use excessive force during peaceful protests frequently organised by Palestinian youth calling for an end to the closure of the Gaza Strip. Israeli soldiers located along eastern borders opened fire at civilans with live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas canisters killing one and injuring 19. With this incident, the number of fatalities since the begigning of demonstrations on 19 May 2017 rose to two, while the number of injuries increased to 52, including 8 children.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, at approximately 5:00 pm on Friday, 9 June 2017, IOF opened fire and launched tear gas canisters at Palestinian youth protesting near the border east of Jabaliya in North Gaza district. As a result, A’ed Khamis Mahmoud Jum’a, 20, resident of Jabaliya, died after he was shot with a bullet in his head, while 19 others were injured. Medics at the Indonesian Hospital described their injuries as moderate to minor. Medical staff also treated demonstrators for gas inhalation.
Al Mezan strongly condemns attacks against civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), and asserts that Israeli practices represtent grave and systematic violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Al Mezan stresses that the escalation of Israeli violations and the illegal closure of Gaza testify to Israel's intention to maintain the illegal occupation of the oPt, further depriving Palestinians of their right to self-determination.
Al Mezan calls on the international community to uphold their legal obligations under international law to provide protection for civilians, and to implement concrete steps that would realize the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. Al Mezan asserts that the failure to act and the silence of the international community about Israel’s violations has further encouraged the Israeli government, forces, and authorities to perpetuate policies and practices that constitute violations of international law.
