This page was created to highlight the first anniversary of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip (Cast Lead), which started on 27 December 2009 and continued for 23 days. The impacts of this aggression on the population of Gaza were devastating, as reported by Al Mezan in its statistics report Cast Lead in Numbers and the Goldstone Report. Commenting on the Israel's siege of Gaza, the UN Fact-Finding Mission (Goldstone Mission) concluded that the series of acts that deprive Palestinians in the Gaza Strip of their means of sustenance, employment, housing and water, that deny their freedom of movement and their right to leave and enter their own country, that limit their access a court of law and an effective remedy, could amount to persecution, a crime against humanity. From the facts available to it, the Mission is of the view that some of the actions of the Government of Israel might justify a competent court finding that crimes against humanity have been committed (emphasis added) (Paragraph 75). It is hardly comprehendible that this siege has continued since after this aggression, despite the clear outcry of international community.
This page provides updates and documentation by Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights with the aim of showing the situation for ordinary people in Gaza one year after this aggression. It carries a call for the international community to end its silence and inaction and take steps to bring the inhuman situation in Gaza to an end without any further delay. It is also a reminder that victims of human rights and IHL violations in Gaza have full rights to justice and reparation, which cannot be achieved without ensuring accountability of those who violated their rights.
The page includes a group of press releases, stories from the field of families who were attacked least year and how they have been coping, new reports and materials by Al Mezan centre, and new reports and materials by other human rights and humanitarian organizations.
